Travel & Hospitality Experience

Example of promoting a hotel under difficult circumstances:

In the late 1980s several streets of the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. were closed for Halloween activities (this is no longer the case). This affected one of my customers, then called the Georgetown Marbury Hotel, because automotive access was restricted. The hotel typically lost a great deal of the busines that would otherwise check in or out on that date. I scheduled a special promotion to focus on the foot traffic. I hired an off-duty policeman to give free breathalyzer tests and placed a tent sign on the sidewalk. Anyone who failed the test received a deeply discounted room rate. The promotion was picked up in advance by The Washington Post as a public service and the hotel experienced 100% occupany for Halloween. The cost of the promotion was minimal.

Other typical hotel-related projects:

Promoted the grand opening of Woodfin Suites properties in the Washington, D.C. area by organizing "treasure hunts" for local travel agents throughout the properties.

Promoted international hotels in Africa by personally planning and leading dozens of travel agent and travel trade press familiarization trips.

Promoted multiple brands held under an international conglomerate to include one Ramada Inn, one Holiday Inn and three small luxury properties in Washington, D.C. and New York, NY.

Re-engineered the signage of a Hyatt hotel for greater visibility while maintaining compliance with the chain's corporate identity standards.

  • Promoted international destinations at conventions and trade shows such as, for example, ASTA in Seould, Korea.
  • Promoted Air France through the International Young Fashion Designers' annual contest and the securing of major sponsors for same.
  • Promoted Air Afrique in conjunction with other tourism projects.
  • Promoted Togo, West Africa, as a international tourist detination, more than doubling the country's visitor volume from North America and earning the 1983 Silver Anvil Award from the Public Relations Society of America. As a result I was invited to lecture in George Washington University's graduate program in travel & tourism.
